БиографияУчился в Сент-Эндрюсском университете, Университете Галле и Лейденском университете. В 1855-1856 годах - профессор арабского языка в Университетском колледже Лондона, в 1856-1861 годах - в Дублине. В 1861-1870 годах - сотрудник отдела рукописей Британского музея. С 1870 года - Адамсовский профессор арабского языка в Кембридже. С 1876 года - член-корреспондент Петербургской АН. Научное наследиеВ обучении арабскому языку продолжает использоваться его «Грамматика». Многие его работы по сирийской литературе сохраняют свою научною ценность, особенно каталоги Британской библиотеки и Кембриджской университетской библиотеки.
